Submitted on October 23, 2009 No Comment

The rib cage has become a very popular place to get tattoos done over the last few years. But what many people do not know is that it is not the easiest place to get a tattoo done. It is painful and quite difficult for the artist to get the design right. So the point of all this is that one should be very careful while getting a tattoo in the rib-cage region.

Perhaps the most common design for men is script or words. They are either in old English or stylized fonts that make it look like some famous apparel brand. But what one should be looking for is something that has a strong line which has an importance or holds a special corner in a person’s heart and is has been done in a bold font. Some other popular designs among men are crosses, dragons, swords and even tribal designs.

Women also are getting texts or sayings tattooed in the rib area. But unlike men they prefer longer texts like poems or a font with more swirls that looks feminine. Women choose fonts which has a finer line and more detail. But there are many other options ranging from flowers, cherry blossoms, and Hawaiian hibiscus to even swallows or old school nautical stars.

Some important Considerations

The reason why tattoos in this region is more painful is because the rib cage bones are close to the skin which makes it more painful as compared to other regions where there is more fatty tissue. But there are certain precautions that one can take to reduce the amount of pain.

1. BREATHE - breathing should be kept at a constant and steady rate. Holding your breath and tightening the body will only make it more painful. The trick is to stay calm and relaxed.

2. DISTRACTION -Think of something else, pleasant things to mind off of the pain and keeping distracted. So most people tend to listen to the iPod a lot. Some nice soothing and calm music like reggae is advised but you can whatever relaxes you.

3. TAKE A BREAK – A good option would be to take a few short breaks during the session. The artist would obviously want to get the work done quickly so he or she can move on to their next client. But one should always insist on taking a minute off or a break during the ordeal.

4. MULTIPLE SESSIONS – If the pain proves too much, taking two or three sessions to finish the tattoo would be a good idea. Trying to be too brave or strong would be quite foolish in this regard as you could end up hurting yourself.

But this motive of this article is not to discourage people to get tattoos in the rib-cage regions but to give precautions. If one has a have a great design and idea then by all means he or she should go for it. Just keeping the above tips in mind would ensure to reduce the threshold of pain one has to endure.
